The Field School:

The concept of a “field school” is adopted in this context with the apparent reasons to disseminate facts about certain conditions and attribute about the varied cultural entity of places in several Asian countries.  This is to give more sense to every individual participating in the field school to really understand and appreciate the complexities that surround the principles of heritage conservation in the Asian context.

On the physical attributes, there are different characteristics in different areas and places visited.  There so many ways in which individuals, groups and stakeholders view these physical entities.  There are philosophies guiding each intrinsic value in a particular community regarding their own heritage.  There are different approaches undertaken by different agencies in the light of conserving the cultural heritage of certain localities.  In short, there are so many inherent features portraying Asian cultural heritage that made it almost impossible to disseminate some of the facts in a confined “classroom-like” lectures.  Being in the “field”, observing, listening to on-site explanation from various individuals/groups (authorities or the locals) and talking to these people, will bring better insight to the whole issue of cultural heritage and conservation.

The participants for the “field trips” will comprise of mainly individuals from various fields of professions who have been actively involved in some major heritage conservation works in their own countries.  They are rightly “experts” on their own fields with precious information and knowledge to share. Because of the varied nationality of the participants, it is anticipated that they will share their own experiences and to act in complementary to each other in understanding a common ground in the future to establishing the appropriate “Asian Chapter” for cultural resource conservation and management.
