Professor Dr. Yukio NISHIMURA, Urban Design Laboratory, Department of Urban Engineering, The University of Tokyo
Yukio NISHIMURA Trained as physical planner at the Department of Urban Engineering, University of Tokyo, where he got BA, MA and D Eng. in planning, Professor Yukio Nishimura teaches urban planning, urban design and urban conservation planning at the Univ. of Tokyo, his alma mater. Majoring in conservation planning, he has also been advising a number of historic cities and towns for their conservation plans throughout Japan as well as some Asian countries, such as Taiwan, where he is chief honorary advisor to the Council for Cultural Affairs. He also serves as Vice President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS, whose functions include evaluation of World Cultural Heritage nominations as a consultative body of UNESCO. He is also Executive Committee member of Asian Planning Schools Association, APSA. He is the author of two award-wining books; Urban Conservation and Urban Design (1997), and Urban Conservation Planning (2004) (both Japanese) and five other books and contributed more than fifty books as coauthor or editor.

Syed Zainol Abidin IDID
After a short stint as an assistant planner in a state town and country-planning agency (1977 – 1979), Syed Idid started teaching town planning at the Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1983 and after 12 years in service (in 1995) was promoted to Associate Professor. He is leading personnel in the field of urban design and urban conservation and through the Urban Design and Conservation Research Group (UDCRU) of the faculty, Syed Idid’s contribution towards instigating awareness in the aspects cultural and heritage in the country are numerous.
In 1991-93 he was the project field coordinator for the National ‘Inventory on Malaysian Architectural Heritage'; a survey on heritage buildings for the Department of Museum and Antiquities covering 247 towns throughout Malaysia for the purpose of urban conservation. In 1994 working for the Malaysia Heritage Trust (Badan Warisan Malaysia), he produces the country's first 'Conservation Action Area Plan for Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Heeren Street) and Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker's Street)' for the Melaka Municipal Council. Subsequently in 1995, he undertook a conservation master plan study to revitalize an ex-mining town of Sungai Lembing (the world deepest and longest underground tin mine) for the Kuantan Municipal Council. Through the early years with the Malaysia Heritage Trust, Syed Idid has contributed significantly towards the awareness on cultural heritage and urban conservation to the public at that time.
His involvements with various agencies like the UNESCO, Asia West Pacific Network for Urban Conservation, the Department of Museum and Antiquity, various states government agencies and the Town and Country Planning Department has made Syed Idid a planner of outstanding caliber in this country. Through these involvements he had contributed largely in realizing the awareness amongst the role players and had drawn up policies, guidelines and actions to facilitate the conservation of urban cultural heritage. Most significantly is that he had shown the role and the importance of the Town Planning profession as guardians of the urban cultural heritage.
Among papers written by Syed Idid are those related to the following topics: urban identity, human activities and urban images, conservation guidelines, role of town planning in urban conservation, adaptive reuses, public participations and awareness in urban conservation, places of cultural significance and meaning of special places. Many of these were delivered at international conferences in the Asia Pacific regions. He is the author of 320 pages book by the Malaysia Heritage Trust with the art work by Susan Lau, entitled “Pemeliharaan Warisan Bandar (Conservation of Landscape Heritage)”. The book that brings awareness to the public about urban conservation and its role in preserving the townscape heritage of Malaysian towns.

Debashish NAYAK
Debashish Nayak has been the Advisor, Heritage Program at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) since 1996. He is the Founder, Director/ Trustee of the CRUTA Foundation Foundation for Conservation and Research of Urban Traditional Architecture), Calcutta, 1990–2005. He is also the founder and Director, Heritage Initiative, Nehru Foundation for Development.
Graduated from the School of Architecture, Institute of Environmental Design (IED), Vallabh Vidhyanagar, Near Vadodara, Gujarat, India with Gold Medal in 1985, Debashish consequently pursued training in Urban Conservation at International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural property (ICCROM), Rome in 1986 and Public Participation Management of Urban Conservation for Proposed Center of Cultural Heritage Conservation at Pennsylvania State, University, USA, 1987. Debashish was the recipient of many fellowships and awards and among them are: • Friends of the United Nation Citizen’s Award, 1995, for cultural development in communities on the occasion of UN’s 50th anniversary celebration at New York along with HH The Dalai Lama (for Human Rights) and Shri S. L. Bahuguna (for Environment Protection). • Ten Outstanding Young Indian Award, 1994, Indian Junior Chamber. • Voluntary Action Excellence Award, 1992, Calcutta Junior Chamber. • Ashoka Fellow, 1990-1993, Ashoka Innovators for the Public, Washington DC for facilitating Public Participation in Urban Conservation and Economic Regeneration.
On IFSAH, Debashish participated as resource person during the 1st and 2nd IFSAH and coordinated the 3rd IFSAH, North-West India 2005. Debashish is actively involved in many heritage projects throughout Indiaand had been advisors to many conservation movements such as being the advisor for Tera Heritage Village Project for the Government of Gujarat; advisor for the Heritage Walk of Nadiad for the Collector of Kheda; advisor to the Lothal Interpretation Centre for the Collector of Ahmedabad; and he is the INTACH Chapter Advisory Committee.

Laretna Trisnantari ADISHAKTI
Laretna Trisnantari Adishakti, popularly known as Sita, was born into a family of conservationists who stimulated her interest in Indonesia’s traditions and inspired her studies: she received an engineering degree from Gadjah Mada University in her native Yogyakarta (1982), a Master’s in architecture from the University of Wisconsin (USA, 1988) and a doctorate in engineering from Japan’s Kyoto University (1997). Employed as a lecturer in several disciplines at Gadjah Mada University since 1983, Adishakti has, in her words, "spread as many heritage ‘viruses’ as possible" to encourage Indonesians to conserve their rich heritage. As head of the country’s leading heritage conservation organisations, she is spearheading a campaign to protect the city of Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java; restoring the endangered Tamansari Water Castle, once a sacred site for a sultan and his entourage; and studying the cultural landscape of Borobudur Temple and its environment to ensure its proper heritage management. Sita’s influence also extends internationally through her lectures and as a member of UNESCO-ICCROM’s Asian Academy for Heritage Management and of the International Council on Monuments and Sites. Complementing her architecture and heritage projects, Adishakti is a devotee of the arts, including Indonesian flower arranging.
